If you an expecting or a new mom, chances are that, you want a perfect crib for your baby’s nursery. You might be unsure of buying a new crib or accepting the offers of friends and family members who might have a nice but used piece at home. The list of baby items, which is needed to be bought, just seems endless!

The bottom line is that- the choice between a new or used crib will not affect the baby’s love for you. As long as you are giving all to their care; as long as they feel loved and nurtured, they won’t be at the least bothered by your choice. Basically, whatever crib you use-a new or an old one- it should be safe to use for your precious bundle of joy.

If you buy a new crib (which is advised by most organizations linked with baby furniture safety) – it is sure to meet the minimum government safety requirements. Look out for products which either display JPMA seal of approval or the BS ‘Kite’ mark, as they have been tested painstakingly to meet all the safety requisites. A safe crib must have a firm, well-fitting mattress and no misplaced or cracked planks/slats. Also, the head or foot slat should have no cutouts. These checks can also be made for ‘handed-down’ cribs, besides other tests, which make sure that the crib and bedding are safe for your baby :

• The bars should be spaced out at a width of not more than 2 3/8″ (breadth of a soda can). This prevents the baby’s head from getting stuck between them.
• The crib should have no flaky or loose paint.
• Any high posts that the baby may catch its clothes on must be changed.
• Any wobbling should be eliminated by making sure that all joints are unyielding.
• The lowering and raising of the drop sides should preferably be controlled by one hand. The sides should totally lock when raised.
• The top of the side bar should be 22″ over the mattress.
• It would be best to replace the mattress in an old crib with one which is firm, clean and fits snugly.
• Bedding must confirm to fire safety rulings. Using sheets and blankets in bedding is best for babies under 12 months as quilts, duvets, cushions etc., put the baby under the danger of overheating. To guarantee the right temperature, a room thermometer can be kept.
• Do not position the crib close to lamps, curtains, or any furniture that encourage climbing.
• If fitting bumpers ensure that the strings are concealed and secure.
• Do not buy used cribs from stores where you cannot verify its manufacturer or user history.

• When you buy a mattress make sure it fits snugly into the crib. You do not want a space of more than the width of two adult fingers between the crib and the mattress.
• Never use a pillow in the crib due to the possibility of suffocating your kids.
• Keep stuffed animals and excess blankets out of the crib as well because they can also cause suffocation.
• If you are going to have decorative bumpers in your crib be sure to remove them once your baby can kneel or stand so they do not use them to help themselves climb out.

When should you move your baby from his baby bassinet or co-sleeper to a crib?

First, if your infant is comfortable in a crib, then make the switch right away, so said an article I read. Some babies may enjoy this type of sleeping right from the start, rather than sleeping in a cozy baby bassinet. There is no need to wait for age or size to determine the move since a crib is
designed for small infants up to toddler-age children.

However, if your baby seems to be snoozing fine without a crib, then the following are a few things to keep in mind when making the change. Most babies outgrow bassinets at 3 months of age. So, if your baby is reaching this age, it’s time to make the transition to a crib.

Once your baby can move around and/or sit up, a bassinet is too small and dangerous for him. An infant has no concept of gravity and does not yet possess the skill to hold himself up with falling out of a bassinet, which is not constructed for mobile infants.

Do not put pillows and stuffed animals in a crib to fill it out since these items are SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) risks. Infants have been known to suffocate to death in soft pillows and toys.

To make the transition from a baby bassinet to crib a smoother one, get your child used to being in a large crib. Perhaps let him play in his crib for a while during the day. The article recommends letting him watch you tidy up from his crib.

A softer mattress can be the cause of suffocation and can certainly be a safety hazard. If its too soft, the babies mouth and nose could become engulfed in the fabric.

Fit:

Although this is usually not an issue, you want to make sure that your new mattress actually fits your crib. Most cribs come in standard sizes these day; however, it is important to double check. If the mattress is too small, this could pose a safety issue for your baby. The mattress should fit snugly against the crib.

Covers:

Mattress covers can also pose a risk of suffocation to your baby. Make sure that your cover is made from quality material that cannot be easily torn or punctured. This will prevent your baby from trying to crawl underneath.

Overall, keep safety in the forefront of your mind when shopping around for a new baby crib mattress. In particular make sure it is firm, that it fits, and that your have a durable mattress cover.

Baby cribs, being the child’s first bed, have a most interesting history! The first types of baby cribs were a small swinging or rocking bed known as a cradle. Before the colonies were settled by Europeans, Native Americans cradled their babies in a multitude of different styles, almost as diverse as our modern baby cribs. There were bark cradles, skin cradles, lattice cradles, board cradles, basket cradles and many more. Swaddling (wrapping the baby tightly in cloth or skins) was a favorite of many tribes since this was seen as a safety standard. Many Navajos still use a traditional board cradle that swaddles the baby to keep it safe and protected.

Examples also exist of cribs that represent “great beds of state” for royal babies. These fancy cribs were richly carved and furnished with elaborate and costly hangings. Many cradles were designed so they could rock easily, with one mechanical invention claiming that the cradle would self rock for an hour and a half! Once the baby was too large for the cradle it graduated to a trundle bed. The name is derived from the utility of this bed which was made to fit easily under the parent’s bed and thus conserve space. The baby crib came into existence as homes became larger, during the 1800′s, and could accommodate their size. Baby cribs were also passed on through generations since they were constructed of solid, durable wood found locally. If you run across such a crib today you will marvel at its sturdiness. The basic shape and design of the crib has not changed much since the 19th century although we have an ongoing improvement in design as well as an ever increasing demand of higher safety standards . We urge parents to keep a close eye out for safety, both when purchasing a new crib and to maintain an existing crib.

Make sure that the baby bedding and crib for your new baby are safe

There will be plenty of people queuing up to give you their old nursery furniture and crib bedding when you are pregnant. I know that we belong to a throwaway society these days but there is something about our baby things that makes us want to hold on to them. Be grateful for these offerings because babies are an expensive business but make sure it’s all safe before you use it.

Is it a cot, cradle or crib?

There is a special something about your baby’s first bed, whether it’s a Moses basket or a crib (cot or cradle in the US) or a cot (US – crib). You can spend many hours lovingly re-lining and making drapes for a cradle that you’ve been given and you can check whether it’s safe for baby at the same time.

Checking baby bedding and crib for safety

If your cradle was made of wicker make sure that there are no broken or loose bits of wood and that all the joints are tight. You will probably need to replace the mattress because that’s the one thing that may not have survived very well. When fitting the drapes make sure that there are no loose threads or pieces of material that the baby might grab a hold of and shove into their mouth.

Buy new bedding for crib if you can

Most organisations that are concerned with the safety of baby furniture, such as the Juvenile Products Manufacturer’s Association in the USA and British Standards in the UK say that you should buy new furniture and bedding if it’s possible. The products displaying either the JPMA seal of approval or the BS ‘Kite’ mark, have been tested that they meet all the appropriate safety requirements.

There are some checks you can do on cribs, to ensure that your baby is safe and happy. Hopefully the baby will spend a lot of time on it’s own in the crib so it’s worth spending some time looking it over.

Baby bedding crib safety checklist

Here are a few points to remember when checking your baby equipment for safety:

• Make sure there is no chipped, loose or toxic lead paint.
• To stop baby’s head from getting between the bars of the crib make sure that the bars are closer than 2 and 3/8 inches apart.
• The header and footer boards of the crib should be solid with no holes for baby to get into trouble with. Make sure that there are no posts to catch baby’s clothes on.
• Tight joints and fixings will prevent the crib from wobbling.
• Make sure that the side rail raising and lowering mechanism of the crib can be managed with one hand and is fully secure when raised.
• Ensure that the top of the side rail is at least 22 inches above the crib mattress.
• The mattress should be firm and clean. I think that I would always buy a new mattress for a new baby. Make sure that it fits snugly in the crib.
• All bedding must conform to the fire safety regulations.
• Make sure that bumper strings are hidden and secure.
• Bedding for cribs: Never use duvets, quilts, sheepskin or pillows for babies under 12 months old as they can overheat. Use a combination of sheets and blankets and place a thermometer in the room.
• Never put the crib next to cords, lamps, window blinds/curtains, or furniture that the baby could climb. You will be surprised at how well they can climb.

Have a safe, wonderful and fun time with your baby and remember that they grow up quickly.
