The New Taga

Is it a bicycle? Or is it a baby stroller? Or is it an expensive death trap for your toddler?

The Dutch sure do love their bicycles, so its really not surprising a designer from the Netherlands has come up with hybrid bicycle-baby-stroller. Its not the first of its kind… but its one of the more stylish. (Technically its a tricycle-baby-stroller, but whatever.)

“If you come to a situation where you don’t want to cycle or you’re not allowed to cycle, at the subway or in a supermarket, in less than 20 seconds you can convert it into a stroller,” says Jeroen de Schaaf, Taga’s European manager. The company is hoping to launch the Taga in North America this summer.

Bicycle - Baby Stroller

So far the Dutch manufacturer has won three European design awards for its coveted bicycle-buggy concoction and is being wildly endorsed by parenting blogs online (freaking yuppies jumping on the latest bandwagon). It sells in Britain for £1,695 (over $3000 CDN).

Its not lightweight however, clocking in at 64 pounds despite Taga’s aluminium alloy-frame Taga. That is roughly three times heavier than an average bicycle, so I guess the yuppies will be getting a workout pushing this thing everywhere.

When you finding the best car seat, try to check is that matches to your baby’s size and weight. The car seat also fits properly in your car and is easily installed.

There are some types of baby car seats such as infant seats, front facing car seats, and convertible seats. And each type of car seat has a lot of variations. Infants or children under a year of age should be placed in rear-facing seats in the center of the rear seat. And the older children can sit facing front and their seat are usually placed behind the driver or passenger. Discuss your options with your pediatrician, if you have children with special needs that may require different restraint systems.

Your child will be ready for using the baby car safety restraint system without a booster seat when they can sit comfortable in the seat the whole trip and the knees can bend at ease over the edge of the seat. Also consider that the belt crosses the shoulder between the neck and the arm. The lap belt is must be low and touches the thighs.

The great protection that can hold your baby tighter in the seat in the event of a crash is a five-point or six-point harness. The five-point harness has two straps at the shoulders, two straps at the hips and one at the crotch. The T-shield is a padded triangle that latches at the crotch while the overhead shield comes down from over the head and latches at the crotch. Avoid a T-Shield, because it allows too much room or can get in the way of chubby tummies and legs. The stalk of the T-Shield can also cause serious injury to your baby.

It is safe to use second-hand baby car seats provided you do a safety check which belts and harnesses should not be frayed or cracked. Don’t forget to look into the history of the car seat, if it has been in a car crash or if the seat is more than 5 years old do not buy it.

By Kay: Excellent little monitors. I’ve had no problem with static despite the number of electrical appliances running in and around my house. The sound is very clear and I rarely have to turn the volume up higher than the minimum. The light meter is very accurate and defines between baby noise and other noise (radio, fan etc.) well. I’ve read complaints about this model that you can’t mute the sound completely which is true, but I don’t know why you’d want to do that anyway, you might as well not bother having a monitor if you’re not going to listen to it. Amazingly for such quality it’s one of the lowest priced monitor sets on the market even at full price, and can often be found on sale so you really can’t beat it.
